Norfolk men’s 65+ team – Summer 2017
Results: Home v Northumberland 8-2; v Bedfordshire 8-2
Away v Isle of Man 8-2; v Suffolk 6-4; v Northants 10-0
Norfolk men’s 65+ team enjoyed an unbeaten season, and were fortunate in being able to keep the same team throughout and maintain the winning run. The main feature was that no doubles rubbers were lost; this was especially important in the crunch match v runners-up Suffolk, in which Norfolk won both reverse doubles after going 2-1 behind after the first round.
The trip to the Isle of Man was difficult to organise but worthwhile as without it promotion would have been denied. The wind over there was almost impossible to play in, but with no indoor courts available we were just thankful it didn’t rain as well! We are grateful to Norfolk LTA for their extra help for this match.
In his first year at this level David Henderson started off as No. 1 singles but subsequent injury meant he had to restrict himself to doubles. Philip Tye switched to singles and finally managed to win in the last match after two long struggles in previous games. Rob Ollman was the second singles player and won four out of five. Keith Arnold remained unbeaten in all his doubles.
The team will be promoted to Division 2 next year and are looking forward to the challenge.
