The Norfolk Ladies 50’s team have had another successful season in 2017. Having won the seniors inter county Championships in the 50’s for the last two years we set out on a mission to make it 3 years in a row.

With a dedicated team made up of Judy Horn, Trish Peal(captain), Sue Rich, Jane Ray and Lesley Cooper we were drawn to play Surrey,Hertfordshire and Warwickshire at home and Leicestershire and Kent away. These matches were played over the summer with great success. All encounters were won and out of the 25 rubbers contested only 3 were lost. Hence we were through to the finals again. This time we had to play Yorkshire on the first weekend in December at the David Lloyd centre in Dudley.

Trish Peal played their number 2 singles first and won. Next it was Judy Horn’s turn to play the no1 singles and after a superb performance she too won. Then Sue Rich and Jane Ray took to the court to play the doubles pair. Having lost the first set, they came back strongly and took the rubber in a championship tie-break. Norfolk were now 3 rubbers up and could not be beaten so were awarded the match and the title with no further rubbers to be played.

So I am pleased to say we have achieved our aim and retained our national title for a third successive year.

It’s been a wonderful season with Judy and Trish being undefeated both in their singles and doubles matches, as have Sue and Jane when playing together in Doubles.

Thanks have to be given to Virgin Active/ David Lloyd club in Norwich for their support and allowing the use of their facilities for training and Matches. Also thanks to all the ladies we play with from Norfolk who have given us unfailing support. Finally thank you team members for always making yourselves available and being so committed. Well done and well played.

I would like to wish my successor Sally Bridgstock as the incoming captain a happy and successful year next year. Good luck.

Trish Peal
