This weekend, the U/18 boys were in div 4 county cup action in Sunderland.

The team consisting of Fred Withers, Joe Hendon, Scott Whiting, Ethan Terry, Will Stoppani, Regan Bessey, Barnaby Taylor, Matthew Tink played against Cumbria, East of Scotland and Durham & Cleveland.

On Friday they played Cumbria which as it turns out was the promotion match. It wasnt to be with Norfolk suffering a devastating 0-9 defeat, a result which flattered Cumbria. There were winnable matches in this tie and it was disappointing that Fred as No.1 player had to go on court at 0-5 and 0-8 down.

The team had a good, honest chat in the evening and changes to personnel would enable both Matt Tink and Barnaby Taylor to make singles debuts against East of Scotland on Saturday. Across the board the team showed more grit and character and deservedly won the match 7-2. Taylor and in particular Tink, despite defeat showing a willingness to compete in a 3 hour marathon.

Terry, Whiting and Withers were all commanding in victory and Stopanni and Bessey recovered well to produce some fine tennis in doubles wins.

On Sunday the team needed three rubbers to avoid relegation which they accomplished with ease against Durham & Cleveland. An 8-1 victory was achevied with five singles wins, including a resurgent Joe Hendon.

All in all a decent weekend. Promotion was probably just out of reach, so to win two rubbers in the manner they did was credit to this young team.

Well done to all.
